Feedback 23/11/09

A good start Luqy and some good analysis of your prelim task - you do need more work on your research - this should be now being done as homework.

The first genre you should be analysing is music magazines - outline the conventions and then look at covers, contents pages and feature articles and think about the following questions...

- Do they follow typical conventions of music magazines? If not why?

- Who is the target audience (GRASS) and how have they been made to appeal to them?

- Do they successfully make the audience want to read on? ( Cover and contents?)

- why do they work?

In research you need a little more on audience - who is you target audience (Demographic - GRASS and psychographic profiling - Young and Rubicon) Also how will your product appeal to its audience - use MAslow too.

Audience questionnaires are needed - to your target audience - and feedback on this - charts and graphs are always good!

Go onto the ABC website to find out audience/circulation figures for magazines too - is there a market out there for your product?

Now move onto planning this week - ( see the last two sheets on the 'before you blog' handout) Start your mood boards, rough mock up of pages, props list, shooting schedule etc....

GENRE

For my project, i have decided to create a Bhangra music magazine because firstly it appeals to me, and secondly the audience who are mainly asians are very interested in this and there are not many Bhangra music magazines that they can get their hands on. I also chose it because it has never been done before and i thought that it would be good to do as i have some fresh ideas and thoughts for the magazine. In the Bhangra music genre, there are two types, the traditional Bhangra and the modern westernised Bhangra. I have chosen to do the modern westernised one because it appeals to quite a lot of young people who listen to a lot of this kind of music.

The music magazine is a hybrid because it involves Bhangra music, but it is also a way of life, it is integrated into our everyday life, especially for people who listen to this music, they start to think about the music, then the bigger picture, e.g. going to asian weddings, eating asian foods, even learning to speak indian, gujarati, punjabi etc. I am also thinking of including some lifestyle topics in my magazine e.g. relating it to asian food.

ANALYSIS of prelim. task

My preliminary task was to create a cover and contents page of a new college magazine. I am going to upload my preliminary task shortly because something is wrong with uploading it in college. What i liked about my cover was that it was quite catchy because it used bright colours, that could also be associated with learning, education, etc. and also, because it gives some interesting sub headings about what goes on in college, the sneak peek into the staff rooms etc. which i think would make every student have an interest in it and want to buy it. What i liked about my contents page was that it was very "busy", meaning there was a lot of action going on and was very active. It was also good because the layout of all the separate parts was good and all in the right places. However, what i didn't like about the front cover was that i took quite a few good pictures and shots of students but they were not looking at the camera, so i couldn't use them. What i didn't like about the contents page was that there was a bit too much information to take in and that it would drive some of the audience away as they would like something that is appealing and that has that WOW! factor and catches them instantly.

What i could have done to make my cover better was adjusting the pictures, labels, boxes, headings etc. so it looked even better than it is now, and also to maybe include more pictures of more than one model so it would look even more professional. What i could have done to make my contents page look even better could have been to not put as much info. about the magazine on it, just little hints and statements to say what a certain thing was about on a certain page. Also, if i used various shots of different areas/ students around college, i think this would have made it look even better, but overall, i think my preliminary task was good.

preliminary task- cover

For my preliminary task, i had to create a front cover and contents page of a new college magazine. I had training on how to use indesign and photoshop before i did my task so i had a bit of experience using the new software.

My front cover consisted of different stories, a model and other facts and also a Q&A about the college. i named it SMC weekly. I had some difficulty in uploading the magazine so im just going to have to try later.

research -1

This lesson i started my research, but i havent put my preliminary task on yet because its still scanning and will be ready for next lesson so hopefully put on then. My research consisted of 2 genres for my magazine, rnb and bhangra.

This magazine is xxl magazine, and they have used 50 cent. a very well known hip hop rnb artist for their front cover. This magazine stands out and is good because the target audience for this magazine would be 15-25 yr old black african background men. It is a very masculine cover because of the bold fonts, the handcuffs, the way he is wearing his cap, the pile of money he is sitting on, the bling and jewellery and also the title is very bold and recognisable. people who would buy this magazine would probably fit into socio-economic status of around B-E.
